A salute to our troops

This past weekend my family attended the annual Harborfest in Erie, PA. A replica of the Brig Niagara toured the harbor while all sorts of other activities went on onshore, including a concert by the Erie Philharmonic. As is customary, cannon were fired during the 1812 Overture, and, while I was blasting away (on trumpet, that is), my husband and kids got a chance to converse with one of the servicemen who fired the cannon.

According to my husband, this gentleman was an MP whose unit has protected the Iraqi president as well as our own Vice-President Cheney. He thinks we’re doing pretty well in Iraq, contrary to what the "Communist News Network" and other media portrays. Many times, he noted, the media knows troop movement before the troops do; they arrive before the troops, sabotaging their efforts and endangering the troops.

The cannon, he said, were Vietnam-era guns. They fired about 15 rounds.
