Spring Flowers

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

I just want to say that those of you who live through cold winters but therefore enjoy lily of the valley growing naturally are very blessed. Lilacs, too. I LOVE lily of the valley. They're elegant little flowers as they hang along the stem and the bells gently turn up. And their gorgeous scent far exceeds their size. They are amazing little flowers - and they don't grow in So. CA. Neither do lilacs with the invasive scent of those in colder climates.

If these wonders of creation grow naturally in your area, please enjoy them for me. I bet Bonnie gets to emjoy them.

Living in Maine, the first moments of Spring arrive when the Crocus pushes through the last of the snow and opens the purple blossom to the sun. The winters may be harsh and dead, but the flowers always come back. The more fragrant ones are yet to arrive, as the Lilacs are only beginning to bud out, but how great is the anticipation! I will think of you, Melinda, when the first Lilac blooms and I pick the first Lily of the Valley and inhale that wonderful, sweet, scent!

Melinda,

I always imagined I would propagate beds of lily-of-the-valley under a tree or two in my yard... I’m still imagining! But they can be found many places in the area.

The lilacs are just now starting to bud. Every May there is a lilac festival in Rochester, NY’s Highland Park, where some rare and historic varieties can be seen among the park’s 1000-some bushes.

Wish I could send you some, Melinda! Guess you’ll just have to come here some Spring :-)

P. S. Another fragrant favorite here is the peony – do you have them in CA?
