Er, [tap, tap, tap] is this thing on?

I was really pleased to be invited to join the Intellectuelle team, but this introduction thingy has been giving me writer’s block. Maybe if I type quickly, I can get this over with.

I’m in my late thirties, married with no children (please pray for us!). I’m an American, but I’ve lived in London for several years, although I’ve always wanted to move to the country. In the meantime, I have a pleasant but boring office job and a vegetable garden, and I do a lot of homebrewing, baking, jam- and pickle-making and that sort of thing. My favourite authors include J.R.R. Tolkien, G.K. Chesterton and C.S. Lewis. I don’t get to read nearly as much as I’d like. I really like early music and baroque music, especially Bach, Palestrina and Gregorian chant, as well as some folk groups – generally the more traddy British ones.

Also, as some of you will no doubt have guessed by now, I’m a Catholic. I was raised in a more-than-nominal-but-not-exactly-devout Catholic family, and fell away while I was at college. Then I felt the “tug upon the thread” in my mid-twenties and that was pretty much that. Incidentally, while I’m happy occasionally to field questions and discussion about Catholic matters, I don’t want to turn my postings into just apologetics or Catholic-Protestant issues. There are plenty of other places for that on the internet.

Of course, my posts will tend to come from a Catholic perspective – for instance, it’s very difficult right now for me to think about much besides, “It’s Holy Week!

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to this, as I've been a fan of the Intellectuelle blog since it started and I'm honoured to have been asked to join such a great team of Christian women.

We're so glad to have you here! I think I was the one who suggested that you join in the first place--so I'm patting myself on the back today.

And, you are right, it is Holy Week. I'm trying to do more praying and less of other things (like blogging) to prepare for Easter.

Welcome Atlantic - I'm looking forward to your posts. I like listening to some Gregorian chant too - especially after a hectic day.

Yes, Atlantic, "this thing" is on, and we're so glad to have you standing in front of it! Looking forward to your contributions.

I was able to spend a few weeks in London one summer -- fascinating place.

I've got an interest in early music too. I should tell you sometime about the project I did for my senior recital at conservatory -- I transcribed, for brass ensemble, various settings of chant melodies and coordinated that with a slide show of stained-glass windows. Ended with Palestrina :-)

Which reminds me that I have a post sketch on church music "issues" buried in my files -- they (the issues) go a lot further back than most people realize.

Thanks for your welcome!

Back in time to say hello, welcome, how interesting, and looking forward to the new topics that such a fine mix promises! whew- say that in one breath and with a big smile;)

You accomplish the things I dream about, and I have the situation you dream about (the country and children part) - not that you thought about it in terms of being the old woman in the shoe with so many children she didn't know what to do- but there it is!
Prayer is instrumental in opening the womb and giving that blessing. I am so glad you mentioned this so that those who gather in the community here can pray.

again.. so glad you are here- may our mutual efforts be that intellectually stimulating and spiritually uplifting fellowship our hearts have desired. That's what I think this is shaping up to be, and for the first time in a long time I have a sense of sisterhood that reaches beyond the detail of ones own usual circle.

I have to say tho', ewe look ever so familiar....

I discovered the Christian blogosphere (including Intellectuelle) about a year ago. I remember seeing the name 'Atlantic' attached to many very interesting and thoughtful comments both here and on a couple of other sites. So I am really pleased to see that you are going to be a regular contributor here.

BTW, 'Catez' was another name that always caught my attention whenever I saw it pop up in various places. I always knew that there would be an interesting insight attached to that one, too. So you can imagine my pleasure, after returning from a semi-sabbatical from posting, at finding that both of you had joined the Intellectuelle team.

Looking forward to thought provoking posts and interesting exchanges.

Congratulations Atlantic!

Atlantic, I have always enjoyed your comments and input on all of the various blogs we seemed to frequent together! You always put a lot of thought and logic into whatever you write. For a time (because to me the gender of "Atlantic" is unclear) I thought you were a gentleman - and I mean that as a compliment! You are level headed and fair.

I gotta say though that the irony of having a Catholic on Intellectuelle, after all of the hoopla against including one in the original contest, is not lost on me.

I look forward to your contributions.
