Hi Sarah,
It was nice to "get the facts" on you. I have a devotional by James Schaap where he takes Kuyper's meditations and puts them into contempory language. I'm definitely intrigued by Kuyper. I'm reading Total Truth now, and I work for an organization that puts on an annual conference for college students. We are always looking for speakers so I'm glad I came across your info here.
peace,
Christie G.
and p.s. I could really go for some chicken burritos about now!
Christie, please contact me sometime so I can learn more about what you're doing with college students! What organization are you with?
I was an avid Nancy Drew reader also. The 80s did put out some great music--I still have a tape mix of Air Supply and Chicago, but when my boombox from college goes (Sony rocks), I won't have a tape player left to play it :O
I pegged you as an ENTJ or ESTJ. I'm getting pretty good at this Jungian astrology ;) (just having a little fun with the hyper-calvinists, of which I'd probably be one if I drank coffee)
Favorite TV show: “Who’s Line Is It Anyway” just cracks me up.
Amen!!!!! LOL It's the only show I record anymore since I have watched all of the Seinfeld episodes over and over and over. I am bothered by how they keep moving the time slots of this show! grrrr
Colin rules!
Yeah Chicago! My girls grew up listening to Chicago, though very few people their ages know who they are. (You are talking about the group and not the musical, aren't you?) I wore out the Chicago 17 cassette, listening to it every night, while battling pregnancy insomnia while pregnant with DD#3 in '85! DD#2 treated me and hubby to the Chicago/Earth, Wind, and Fire concert last year-the last song of the evening was so awesome, both bands together doing each others songs, and all those horns...! Sorry - I love Chicago. I hear they're coming out with a new cd sometime. Enough about this, good to get to know you Sarah!
"REO Speedwagon" aahhhggg!!!! The only thing I like about REO is that it brings back memories of my father listening to them.
"I heard it from from friend whooo...." aaahhhggg!
Of course, I have no room to talk. If I were not a believer, I'd be listening to Slayer, Venom and the like.
I don't listen to much music, but when I do, its something I always hated (until I met my wife) - Country.
You are a "Presbyterian at heart" so I let you pass on the Speedwagon.
Jeff Downs - Member of an OP Church - What else is there! :)
Sorry, its 2:51 in the AM...my youngest continues to wake up "mommy, mommy" so I decided to get up (this was around 12:30 or so) and I'm still up. Tomorrow morning, I play a Mormon for Sunday School. Not sure how this is going to go now. :)
Sarah, do you have Wynton's Carnaval album? You should check out David Hickman and Thomas Stevens too.
I shouldn't tell you this, but Air Supply was just at Chautauqua, and Chicago was there last year. Some good horn lines in Chicago tunes!
Your childhood memory reminded me of another one of mine -- listening to records with headphones when I was supposed to be in bed. Oh, and I loved chipmunks! LOL
I wanna hear that testimony. :-)
Yeah! An E-personality. ;) Just in case anyone is interested, my answers to these questions are now on my blog.
Enjoyed learning more about you.
I'm a big fan of Whose Line. Wayne's my favorite. Do you remember the original?
I'm with you on Chicago. Do you wail in the car to Air Supply?
You're Barbie comment made me chuckle.
Did Wynton narrate the PBS Jazz series? One the M's did. Hubby & I both enjoyed that. It was interesting to hear him talk about the music because of his passion for it.
Nice getting to know you.
Sugar Addicts of the World Unite! Any tips on how to cure a four year old sugar addict? Don't tell me that mom must go cold turkey first!
Sarah, I enjoyed reading this very much. Thank God there are women like yourself and the rest of the Intellectuelle's to contribute to the marketplace of ideas with healthy food for thought. Keep serving the meals! Everyone loves a free dinner!
Favorite musicians: Wynton Marsalis
When you said this, I about cried in approval. I, myself, am a trumpet player outside of my study of apologetics/philosophy/ and Calvins's principles. As stated above, his Carnival album will sing sweet nothings to your ears. It's a worthwhile investment!
Favorite art genre: Art is one of those areas I need to get serious about yet.
Thank you for stating this. Aesthetics and art seems to be an area I have the hardest time getting "serious" about. It's good to know i'm not the only one with this condition. :)
Long term goals and/or dreams: Becoming a better speaker, writing books, teaching, and getting a Ph.D.
MIND READER! Do I have to pay you for that? Our aspirations are in precisely in sync.
Daniel - I didn't know you and Jeff were blogging (ahem...Jeff didn't TELL me!) Glad to meet you! Thanks for your comments - and yes, I apparently lost my copy of Carnival years ago. Apparently, there are enough trumpetting apologists that we could start our own band ;)
I just snagged a Kuyper in Dutch for 25 cents. I will never be able to read it, but I HAVE it!
I have a baptist pastor friend in Elmhurst. What a small world.
It was nice to get to know you. I can relate to the "T" "J"!
Judy, Elmhurst isn't terribly big...is he currently pastoring a church?
Sarah - I'm curious as to what other "trumpetting apologists" you are speaking on behalf of?
Wouldn't it be hilarious if we created a quartet (assuming we had at least 4 trumpet players) piece to be played as the universal theme for apologists after winning a debate?
As for Jeff, I enjoy his work very much (as I see you are familiar too). Not to long ago he posted a personal favorite of mine about his bag 'o marijuana...oops...I mean bag 'o finely grinded coffee beans. The face he is making that accompanies that blog entry makes me laugh hysterically every time I see it. But besides all that it is a blessing having him along side our team of apologists for Christ. His contributions to counter-cult Apologetics plays a big part in my education pertaining to that area (which I lack in to be honest).
Knowing you are a part of The Center for Bioethics and Human Dignity really sits well with me. We both have a deep care for the defense of the humanity and value of precious unborn babies. One day I hope to work along side you at The Center for Bioethics and Human Dignity.
I've enjoyed the exchange of dialogue. Blessings to you!
Well Bonnie plays trumpet (perhaps 'plays' is an understatement??). So that makes at least 3. As far as working at CBHD...give me a call sometime ;)
Has Jeff brought you over to our side of apologetics - or perhaps you were already there??
I think I read every Nancy Drew book that was written. She was wooonderrfullll!
I liked REO Speedwagon too - what was that title - you can tune a piano but you can't tuna fish? Or was it you can tuna fish but you can't tune a piano? No wait it was....
I like some of the 80s rock. I think I'm the only Christian I know who likes Siouxsie and the Banshees tho.
Enjoyed reading your bio Sarah. I get you on the testimony.
Sarah & Daniel:
I wish I could/would partipate more often in blogging (my thoughts). Over the past two months, I've been dealing with Jehovah's Witnesses over at Robert Bowman's Evangelicals and Jehovah's Witnesses Yahoo group. I think I am going to try to lay low for a while.
I'm now back in school, looking to get this "BS" :) out of the way. Perhaps I will start to blog some thoughts and not just resources!
Sarah, he is a pastor at First Baptist of Elmhurst. Or, was, last I heard. My husband and I were blessed to have him as our pastor for many years and have huge respect for him and his wife.
So there is no misunderstanding, the "BS" referred to above is Bachelors of Science.
Come on Jeff, we know what you really meant. :)
I did mean it to be funny, but wasn't sure how some would take it. :)
