Bling"Although all the rage today, bling couldn't have existed a few years ago; FDR, after all, made the private ownership of gold illegal and confiscated all gold in the country."

I'm not quite sure that bling line is accurate. Gold jewerly was legal during that era. My folks had gold wedding rings and they were married in 1960, well before the laws on gold were relaxed in the 70s.
The law in question was Executive Order 6102-per the Wikipedia on it,
Gold coins and bullion was off limits to individuals from the 1933 through 1974. However, you could have owned a Mr. T Starter Set during that era.
What FDR did was order citizens to turn in gold coins, bullion and gold certificates that had been issued by the Federal Reserve Banks. Citizens could keep up to $100 in gold coin per family member. That's about $2000 per person in today's dollars. The order did not apply to "bling." No one actually went around confiscating gold.
