60 Second Review:
The Outdoor Bible

outdoor_bible.jpgThe Book: THE OUTDOOR BIBLE®

:10 -- The Gist: According to the product designers, THE OUTDOOR BIBLE® originated from a desire "to take God’s word into all of His creation, regardless of the weather or circumstances." Printed on waxy paper in a foldout format, the Bible is "completely waterproof and lightweight, dries quickly, is much stronger than paper, and adapts well to all extremes or reading environments." Comes in six foldout volumes with a burlap carrying bag. (Watch a video demonstration.)

:20 -- The Quote: A.J. Jacobs of National Geographic Adventure on the product: "'And the rain descended, and the floods came . . . ,' (Matthew 7:25.) I have to say, this Bible doth not lie. The water slid right off, as did a little mud that splattered on the pages as I fled for cover, and the Bible dried out completely within two hours."

:30 -- The Good: The product lives up to the hype. It's sturdy, waterproof, and easily manageable, making it ideal for hunting, fishing, and camping trips.

:40 -- The Bad: The only version it comes in is the New American Standard; available only in the New Testament.

:50 -- The Verdict: The Bible has an intriguing map-like foldout style that makes it easy to manage; the text is also clearly printed and highly readable. (View a sample page.) Although a bit pricey ($34.95) for a pocket sized New Testament, its durable enough to withstand years of wear and tear. THE OUTDOOR BIBLE® is an ideal edition for those who want to carry God's Word out of the pews and into nature

:60 -- The Recommendation: Would make a great gift for Christian hunters, backpackers, and others who spend a lot of time outdoors

I think it's a great idea, but it's kinda expensive for a NT. I'm not thrilled about the NASB part, either. Still, if you're outdoorsy, it might be worth not ruining your other Bible(s) to get this.

It looks very cool -- and though I don't want to get into a tired version debate, I need to stand up for NASB. It's still the best word-for-word translation for serious students who want to have the most unbiased interpretation of the original. I think it's an excellent choice and makes me more likely to buy one.
