Yak Shaving Razor #50

Yak Shaving -- [MIT AI Lab, after 2000: orig. probably from a Ren & Stimpy episode.] Any seemingly pointless activity which is actually necessary to solve a problem which solves a problem which, several levels of recursion later, solves the real problem you're working on.

#490 Emergency Hack -- The web site for the Sussex Ambulance service has some handy first aid advice you can download to your iPod. The audio files cover such topics as burns, convulsions, wounds, unconscious patients, and CPR. (HT: LifeHacker)

#491 Repair Tip -- Have a scratched audio or data CD? Using a cotton swab, gently rub toothpaste over the scratches. Keep polishing the plastic surface until the scratch disappers or until you've removed it as much as possible. Clean the CD by washing it with water and dishwashing liquid. (HT: LifeHacker)

#492 School Tool II -- Last week I recommended EasyBib's (YSR #480) bibliography generator for creating citation list in MLA-format. If you need APA-style, Citation Machine offers a useful (free) alternative.

#493 Know Your Fallacies -- Argumentum ad populum -- (Latin for “appeal to the people") a fallacious argument that concludes a proposition to be true because many or all people believe it; it alleges that "If many believe so, it is so." (Example: "It's silly for you to claim that Hitler would not have attacked the United States if they hadn't entered World War II. Everyone knows that he planned to conquer the world.")

#494 Google School -- As its name implies, Simply Google has all the Google service laid out on a spare, utilitarian format. Bookmark the site to acess all your Google tools from one single web page.

495 HowTo -- Make Your Own USB Car Charger For Any iPod (Or Other Devices That Charge Via USB)

♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦

#496 Keyboard shortcut -- To open a new document in MS Word, simply hit the F4 key.
