"Pat [Robertson] doesn't speak for evangelicals any more than Dr. Phil speaks for mental health professionals."

-- Ted Haggard, president of the National Association of Evangelicals,

"There was a time, not all that long ago, where expressing racist sentiments in a church would be politely ignored (if not agreed with) while expressing the idea that homosexuality can be compatible with Biblical principles would get you brained with a shovel."

-- Tim Reed, on how the church takes its cues from society

"The plan of some wealthy Democrats to fund a network of left-wing thing tanks has two flaws. First, those institutions already exist: they're called universities."

-- Marvin Olasky in WORLD blog

"Most people who are secular humanists have the idea that they are doing fine. We are doing fine and our only enemy is the Bible-based far right. The reason why the real threat is the far right is that they have the Bible. And the Bible is a masterpiece. The Bible is one of the greatest works produced in the world. The people who all they have is the Bible actually are set up for life. Not only do they have a spiritual vision given to them but artistic fulfillment. They don’t even recognize just the pleasure of dealing with this epic poetry and drama. Everything is in the Bible. What does the left have? The left has a lot of attitude."

-- Camille Paglia, art critic and self-avowed atheist

****
"I recently asked more than 70 eminent researchers if they would have done their work differently if they had thought Darwin's theory was wrong. The responses were all the same: No."

-- Philip S. Skell, Emeritus Evan Pugh Professor at Pennsylvania State University and member of the National Academy of Sciences

"We [persecuted Chinese Christians], in fact, are praying that the American church might taste the same persecution, so revival would come to the American church like we have seen in China."

-- Unnamed leader in the Chinese house church movement

"It’s eerie, really. Five centuries ago, lay university professors invoked Scripture and religion in order to attack and destroy an opponent whose views threatened to topple academia. Today, they are doing it again. The only difference is the targets – in the early 1600’s, the university professors were trying to destroy Galileo. Today, they’re trying to destroy the theory behind intelligent design, using very nearly the same techniques they used against Galileo."

-- Steve Kellmeyer in "Galileo Revisited"

****
"Unlike most other right-wingers, libertarians have a distinct idea of what they stand for: less government. They also have, in free-market economics, the Right’s most fruitful research program and, in F.A. Hayek, the only recent right-wing theorist to command serious attention from the Left. What libertarians do not have, however, is a comprehensive argument for their ideology."

-- Austin Bramwell in The American Conservative article, "Defining Conservatism Down"

"'I came here thinking my church was doing all right. Now I see we're so dinky and dumb, it's not even funny,' says pastor Steve Irvine of Reno, Nev., who went to his hotel room and cried after each session."

Steve Kellmeyer on Galileo, intelligent design, and evolution:

In Galileo’s time, the philosophers hung grimly onto their posts by denying the use of mathematics and insisting that only purpose mattered. Today’s scientists hang grimly onto their posts by denying the importance of philosophy/theology and insisting that only measurement matters.

[ ... ]

Thus, scientists correctly note that intelligent design is not science, strictly speaking, because intelligent design deals in “why,” that is, while it recognizes the complexity of the reality being measured, it does not investigate the “how” but the “why” of that complexity. Unfortunately, these same scientists fail to note that evolution, at least insofar as it attempts to explain the reasons “why” human persons exist, is also not science. It measures the complexity of the fossil record but insists there is no “why” at all.

Now, real science does not pretend to answer “why” questions, it only answers “how” questions. By insisting there is no “why” – a proposition which real science is manifestly not equipped to discuss - evolution is shown to be nothing more than nihilistic philosophy dressed up as science.

Many scientists complain that the debate over evolution remains a debate only in America. They point out that the Communist Chinese and the Europeans do not engage in such absurd discussion. They are correct. The denial of evolution is precisely the denial of the nihilism the rest of the world already embraces. In other words, the complaint tells us only what we already know.

Galileo was the first scientist, the first to apply mathematics to everything he did. He lived and died a sound Catholic who never wavered in the Faith, regardless of what individual men were coerced into doing to him. Because he was a good scientist, he was able to distinguish between the men who attacked him and both the falsehoods and the truths they espoused. But while Galileo was a good Catholic, he was never a good university professor. He hadn't the stomach to live a lie.

Steve Kellmeyer is a good writer. He raises some interesting points about Galileo, philosophy versus science, and the study of human nature.

Yet he makes some points that are not quite correct about science and scientists.

Scientists are not hanging "grimly onto their posts by denying the importance of philosophy/theology and insisting that only measurement matters."

Likewise, it is not fair to say that "evolution, at least insofar as it attempts to explain the reasons 'why' human persons exist, is also not science." He would be quite correct to say, "Evolution, inasmuch as it is a scientific theory, does not attempt to explain the 'why' of human existence." But by twisting this simple fact around into its converse, he creates the false impression that evolution is not a scientific theory.

Mr. Kellmeyer explains that, "By insisting there is no 'why' – a proposition which real science is manifestly not equipped to discuss - evolution is shown to be nothing more than nihilistic philosophy dressed up as science." But the scientific theory of evolution doesn't insist on there being no "why". Mr. Kellmeyer is either creating a strawman, or is honestly ignorant of evolutionary theory.

Finally, it is incorrect to hold that, "The denial of evolution is precisely the denial of the nihilism the rest of the world already embraces." This is such a tendentious remark, it is hard not to suspect that perhaps Mr. Kellmeyer is attempting to pander to some of worst fears of his readership.

Mr. Kellmeyer is entitled to his opinion and to peddle it wide and far. But by seeking to create mistrust and foster disrespect for scientists, he is doing both scientists and his readers a real disservice.

Camille Paglia's quote is interesting in that she seems to defend us right wing nuts by praising the greatest book ever written and the "greatest story ever told." However, I note that she does say "The reason why the real threat is the far right is that they have the Bible." I'm assuming that she means what she says and that she believes the far right is a real threat. Or does she only mean to state the fears of the secular humanists? I have always appreciated her brutal honesty, and I wonder where she stands on us right-wingers. I hope she is smart enough to differentiate the large group of us who are not represented by Pat Robertson.

I tend to agree with evolution as long as it's not evolutionism (to use C.S. Lewis' phrase). Evolution, to me, is natural selection. Evolutionism is natural selection making things better and better until they are perfect. I think too many scientists actually believe that. It seems that there's way too much discussion about evolution without either side being clear what the mature theory and science actually states. How much evidence is there, really, for our descent from apelike creatures? We've accepted this as scientific fact for many years, but excuse me for being a little sceptical of science. I am extremely sceptical of many things coming out of academia.

I actually tried to read "The Origin of Species" once. I couldn't. I wonder how many people actually have. Are you a scholar Matthew? Can you tell me exactly what the theory of evolution states? Can you tell me there aren't significant gaps in the descent from primordial ooze to doctors performing heart surgery on newborns? I used to argue for evolution against people who believe in six 24-hour days of creation. I still think the 24-hour day crowd is wrong, but I'm not too happy with the theory of evolution anymore.

Tell me where I'm wrong.

According to Stephen Jay Gould, Darwin himself wasn't too keen on the term "evolution", with its implied corollary (or baggage) of directed linear ascent to perfection. (As Chesterton put it, "To Victorians, history ended well -- because it ended with the Victorians.")

Darwin preferred the term "descent with modification".

Paglia's remarks were in the context of her view that the humanities have been "destroyed" in America. She theorizes that the prolific '60's beat culture became lost to drugs or sold out to materialism, and has since evolved into a sneering, jabbing pseudo-"left" (neoleft?) which has depopularized the arts by rejecting beloved religious/historical art forms. In so doing, the left has left the people, she says, and needs to reconnect with the people to repopularize the humanities. (She suggests listening to talk radio!)

In contrast to the left's spiritual bankruptcy, the right has the Bible, which Paglia admires as literature and poetry, a source of spirituality and an inspiration for the humanities. I don't think she admires or defends the right. She does believe, however, that "the people" are voting for capitalism and against socialism, and capitalism is better for the arts than is socialism, in her view.

Very interesting reading. Although Paglia appears to value religion and admire the Bible primarily for as inspiration for art, her commentary is incisive.

Forgive me, but does Darwin's theory posit that we all came from some primordial ooze? Or is that some theory that came later? I wonder if both "creationists" and "evolutionists" have Darwin all wrong. Have we all attributed theories to Darwin that he never espoused? Did he really theorize that completely different species have evolved? That appears to be what we are all arguing about. Is there really that much evidence for natural selection accounting for completely new species?

I've been reading Bill Bryson's "Brief History of Nearly Everything." One absolutely glaring constant throughout is how wrong scientists have been about our physical world--and how absolutely crazy some widely held theories were.

How much of evolution is based on observable science?

What is the real battleground between proponents of intelligent design and evolutionists? I tend to think that there is less science in evolutionary theory than its proponents want to believe, and that the intelligent design people have figured that out. Phillip Johnson, the law professor at Berkeley, is a lawyer by training, not a scientist. From what I understand, he simply comes at evolutionary theory from a logical point of view and finds that there are too many logical fallacies for it to hold water.

I wonder if Darwin himself would be completely unhappy with Johnson's analysis. I wonder if today's supporters of Darwin have set his theories in stone while Darwin himself would still consider it a theory and nothing more.

Hi Jd,

I think there are two big problems with evolutionary theory.

First, some of the most interesting parts of the theory of evolution are not verifiable by direct observation or by laboratory experimentation. Evolution describes historical processes that have occurred over geological time-scales. As such, it occurs way too slowly (most of the time) for us to witness it first-hand.

Second, evolution states that man is descended from "lower" animals, at first from chimp-like primates, and ultimately from bacteria-like single-celled creatures. Not only is this very counter-intuitive for someone who hears it for the first time, it is often very disturbing as well. If someone is religious, then the evolution of human beings is often a direct challenge to his understanding of the sacred origins of the world and of humanity.

I don't think there are any problems with evolutionary theory per se though.

One of the toughest criticisms that circulates about certain evolutionary theories is that the theories are not falsifiable. If evidence pops up that goes against the current understanding, then the theory is allegedly so malleable that one can just say, "Well, let's change the theory a little bit here and everything will be just fine."

But I've looked pretty closely at this issue, and I'm persuaded that the main theories of evolution are actually quite falsifiable, and are upheld time and again by various independent streams of evidence.

I've also read some of Philip Johnson's analysis of evolution. I found that his logical fallacies just don't apply to evolution. They seem to be based on some misunderstanding of evolution on the part of Mr. Johnson.

You are right to point out that Darwin's ideas are somewhat different from the theories of scientists today. We now know how inheritance is accomplished through genetics and the DNA code, for example.

But Darwin was a very, very meticulous scientist. He sat on his theory of evolution through natural selection for many, many years, for he thoroughly recognized its revolutionary nature, and he was content to accumulate as much evidence as he possibly could. He only published "The Origin of Species" because his hand was forced by another scientist who was about to publish the same theory independently.

Darwin knew that evolution was factual, as opposed to merely theoretical. Since he also knew it was controversial, he waited to prove the theory with evidence before accepting it. He waited to let the evidence speak for itself, just as much to convince himself as to convince others.

However, you may have noticed during your attempt to read "The Origins of Species" that Darwin mentions "the Creator" many times. The original Darwinist was also a creationist! Apparently, Darwin saw no contradiction between the theory of evolution through natural selection and his belief that God created the earth and life itself.

This is not just a historical curiosity, an ironic happenstance. It is actually quite revealing about the nature of the scientific enterprise: far from being nihilistic monsters, scientists are seekers after the truth, and will go wherever the evidence directs them to go. If the evidence goes against some of their religious beliefs, they don't necessarily reject all religion, but just modify their beliefs on the basis of what they have learned. If science doesn't contradict religion, then scientists don't go around contradicting religion either.

I don't think you are wrong to be unhappy with evolution.

You don't think it explains everything, and in a sense you are right. Scientists have not been able to explain everything about evolution, so evolution is an incomplete theory. There are large gaps in our understanding of the actual historical progression from primordial ooze to heart surgeon.

But scientists have no reason to think that evolution, in some form or another, is not responsible for all the variety and complexity of life today. It is not very hard to imagine that one day we will have satisfactory, detailed explanations for most of the apparent outstanding puzzles of historical evolution.

I myself am not a scientist, or even a scholar (except perhaps an amateur scholar), but I am very interested in science. Science is a very powerful tool, not just for practical applications, but also for unlocking some of the deepest secrets of the physical universe.

Some theories are more contingent than others, and are controversial even among scientists themselves. But evolution has very good standing not only as an established theory, but as a factual description of how species originated and developed.

I can't convince you in one comment, or even in one hundred comments, that the scientists are correct about evolution, so I haven't tried to. I wouldn't even know where to start, since I don't know what specific problems you have with the evidence for evolution.

But I can tell you that one of the most powerful arguments of behalf of evolution for me personally is the cellular structure of life.

Every plant, every animal is an amazing conglomerate of cells, and every cell is an amazing miniature factory of life. Get yourself a good college-level textbook on cellular biology and dive in. Choose a book that has lots of illustrations, especially lots of microscopic photographs of cells and cell structures.

The more you see and the more you read, the more you will be thoroughly impressed with the unity of life at the microscopic level, the level where metabolism, reproduction, and growth reveal their secret mechanisms. It's really quite a blast!

Or better yet, try to get your hands on a microscope and see the textbook pictures spring into life before your very eyes. It's an experience you'll never forget.

Even if you don't end up reaching the same conclusions about evolution as myself, you will certainly learn a lot of wonderful things about your body and about life in general.

jd, you can start here:

Evolution theory is five observations, or facts, and three reasonable inferences drawn from them.

These are the facts of evolution which creationists must deny to falsify evolution.

Observation 1: Species have great fertility. They make more offspring than can grow to adulthood.

Observation 2: Populations remain roughly the same size, with modest fluctuations.

Observation 3. Food resources are limited, and are constant most of the time.

Inference A: In such an environment there will be a struggle for survival among individuals.

Observation 4: No two individuals are identical. Variation is rampant.

Observation 5: Much of this variation is heritable.

Inference B: In a world of stable populations where each individual must struggle to survive, those with the "best" characteristics will be more likely to survive, and those desirable traits will be passed to their offspring. This is natural selection.

Inference C: Natural selection, if carried far enough, makes changes in a population, eventually leading to new species.

(In Ernst Mayr's 1982 book The Growth of Biological Thought, he boils Darwin down to five observations and three inferences from them -- the heart of evolution, according to Donald Johanson and Maitland A. Edey in Blueprints.)

The careful reader will noctice that nothing in ID calls any part of these observations into question.

Then go to Talkorigins.org for more, serious answers.

There are so many mistatements in Matthew's admittedly humble account of why he believes in evolution that I can't deal with them all.

FIRST, he writes:

Darwin knew that evolution was factual, as opposed to merely theoretical. Since he also knew it was controversial, he waited to prove the theory with evidence before accepting it. He waited to let the evidence speak for itself, just as much to convince himself as to convince others.

If so, why was it called a Theory? Darwin did not claim to have 'proved' evoluton. Actually Darwin knew he had no mechanism [genetics-based selection was unknown in his day] and also that he had far too few essential intermediate forms, and worried that they may not be found.
Darwin would be a called a theistic evolutionist today, which means someone who is totally convinced that God HAD to use some evolutionary scheme [even if we still can't find enough scientific proof that it COULD have happened, nor explain how our Sovereign God could ever have become a prisoner of random chance.]

SECOND: Matt excels himself in credulity
But I can tell you that one of the most powerful arguments of behalf of evolution for me personally is the cellular structure of life.

Matthew, what you are saying is that the extraordinary complexity of even the cell membrane, let alone the stupendous 'factories' it contains, is an argument FOR evolution.
What would be a weak argument, then?
Not only do we now know the amazing complexity of the simplest cell, powered by the most amazing DNA and RNA, but we have NO idea how these more basic structures could appear 'by evolution'.

Such 'scientific belief' is sheer faith, unsupported by facts.

But we DO know that the cell 'emerged' remarkably soon after the earliest possible time frame in our understanding of the physical evolution of the Earth. How? No idea. Chance offers only powerfully negative evidence.
[You couldn't have read Johnson with any care.]

Moreover, evolutionists are now divided about the very existence of Darwin's needed intermediate lifeforms. Stephen Gould and others postulated 'saltation' or unexplained rapid jumps in 'evolutionary speed' to explain the fossil record that clearly lacks these intermediate forms in the key places where they are obviously needed. 'Punctuated evolution' theory is a contradition, but thought to be essential all the same.

Unlike Darwin, modern evolutionists have not accepted that the lack of intermediates would be a fatal failing for their theory. They wave it side instead, falling back on the same 'must have' faith of the theistic evolutionists.

So evolutionary theory after 140 years still fails at the most important points - as well as being unobservable except in the trivial, reversible, built-in adjustments we call natural selection.

The fact that all life is based on DNA proves nothing except that God is a very economical, ingenious Creator.

"Contrary to popular myths, Darwin and Lyell were not the hereos of true science, defending objectivity against the fantasies of such catastrophists as Cuvier and Buckland. Catastrophists were as comitted to science as any gradualist; in fact they adopted the more 'objective' view that one should believe what one sees and not interpolate missing bits of a gradual record into a literal tale of rapid change."
