Yak Shaving Razor #3

#13 Firefox Shortcut -- One of the main reasons that I’ve dumped IE in favor of Firefox as my browser of choice is because of the ability to open links in tabs instead of windows. A useful shortcut is to click on the mouse wheel to open a link in a new tab. (Other mouse shortcuts can be found here.) (HT: Lifehacker)

#14 10 New Uses for Dryer Sheets -- #7. Prevent old books from smelling musty when in storage. Stick a dryer sheet between the pages of your beloved copy of Pride and Prejudice. (Read the rest)

#15 MS-Word Hack -- Just as Microsoft’s founder attempts to control your PC, MS-Word attempts to control your documents. Trying to cut-and-paste from Word, for example, can often lead to the frustration of dealing with garbled text. Regain control by removing all the formatting from a particular piece of text (sentence, paragraph, document) before pasting. Simply select the text and hit Ctrl-Shift-N to break Bill Gates’ stranglehold on your words. (HT: Edificial Intelligence)

#19 Google Tool -- Love Google but wish that it had everything in one convenient location? Xtra Google has the solution.

#20 Paper Cuts Solution -- Keep a small tube of Anbesol Gel (oral anesthetic) on your desk. If you get a painful paper cut or hangnail that keeps distracting you from your projects, put a dab of Anbesol Gel on it and wrap it with a bandaid (the bandaid keeps the gel from wiping off). Within two minutes, the annoying pain will be gone and you can get back to work distraction free. (43 Folders Wiki)

#21 Cheapskates Corner -- Want a free web service but don't want a URL with ".blogspot" in the title? ONEsite offers a personal domain, email and a full featured hosting package to build your site – 50MB of space, 3 GB of monthly transfer, SSI, PHP, MySQL, FrontPage Extensions, Site Builder and a built-in blog -- all for free. After the first year you have to pay $35 (still not a bad deal) unless you're a student, then you get the package free for five years.

I alwyas thought that 'How to fold a fitted sheet' was self-evident...

FYI - That Firefox shortcut works in Safari 2.0 (ships with Tiger), as well. I don't know if it was there in previous Safari versions, but I wouldn't be surprised.

You're supposed to fold them why, now? ;)

Keep in mind that now is not the best time to switch to Firefox, what with two big security holes sitting unpatched. Wait until 1.0.4 and then live it up.

The two "big" security holes in firefox do not compare to the chasms in ie.

I bailed on firefox because, in order to get the additional functionality I wanted, I had to add in a bunch of extentions, many of which conflicted with one another. If you are a programmer, you might like working with buggy software.

If not, try avantbrowser. It has tabs (and good tab control), popup killer, ad killer, groups, etc. You can also try maxthon.

Dang it, my link to avantbrowser didn't work - but it's a great browser, and well supported with regular updates.

I like that Word tip, but as a friend just pointed out, it doesn't remove *all* formatting. Any character or paragraph from which all formatting had been removed would be invisible.

Prevent books from smelling musty?!? I love that smell. Opening up an old book - the older the better - catching a whiff of mustiness is one of my favorite olfactory experiences.

Bah, so long as people keep up with the updates for IE, and have a relatively decent anti-virus program (always a good idea regardless of what web browser you use).

As for the Word thing... I honestly have never had that problem with MS Word. I just went into it and applied all manner of odd, random, and uesless formatting to a string of text, and copy-pasted it here, to Notepad, and to Wordpad, and had absolutely no problem with it. Some of the formatting even carried over to Wordpad... For the record, I use MS Word 2002 on XP.

*blinks* There was supposed to be a "IE is a fine web browsing program, so long as you do not mind the lack of tabs (which I have always disliked)" after the ")" and before the ".". My mistake.

Since you use Firefox maybe you'd enjoy the freedom of OpenOffice (open source replacement for MS-Office) and thus avoid your Word hassels. After a decade of Word hassels I've found OpenOffice a breath of fresh air and every bit as powerful.
