Buying a Ticket:
Breaking out of the Evangelical Ghetto

A guy named Saul finds himself in dire straits. His business has gone bust and he's in serious financial trouble. He's so desperate that he decides to ask God for help. He begins to pray: "God, please help me. I've lost my business and if I don't get some money, I'm going to lose my house as well. Please let me win the lottery." Lottery night comes, and somebody else wins it. Saul again prays: "God, please let me win the lotto! I've lost my business, my house and I'm going to lose my car as well." Lotto night comes, and Saul still has no luck.

Once again, he prays: "My God, why have you forsaken me? I've lost my business, my house, and my car. My wife and children are starving. I don't often ask you for help, and I have always been a good servant to you. PLEASE just let me win the lottery this one time so I can get my life back in order." Suddenly there is a blinding flash of light as the heavens open and Saul is confronted by the voice of God Himself:

"Saul, meet me halfway on this: Go buy a ticket."

Evangelicals are a lot like Saul. We want to transform culture, protect religious freedom, and have an impact the lives of our neighbors. What we don’t do, however, is “buy the ticket” that will allow us to have a shot of accomplishing those goals. As Hugh Hewitt notes in his book on Christian ambition, “In a liberal democracy power, authority, and influence go only to those who seek them.” Too often, though, evangelicals only begin to seek those tools after we have already been marginalized, as has happened in the arts, the academy, and the mainstream media.

But there is still an area where evangelicals have an opportunity to solidify a foundation of influence: the blogosphere.

At the end of 2003, Mark Byron took a look at the “evangelical ghetto” within the blogosphere, noting that only two out of the top one hundred blogs listed in the TTLB Ecosystem were hosted by evangelical bloggers. (Byron’s findings caused several bloggers to try to correct this underrepresentation. UK blogger Adrian Warnock, for instance, started the Blogdom for God and the Evangelical Aggregator.)

At the time I speculated that the main problem was that evangelical bloggers were simply poor networkers. Unlike blogs on the political left who had pushed Atrios and The Daily Kos to the top, faithbloggers weren’t really banding together to establish a presence. There were few evangelicals that were even getting attention, much less having the same impact as secular bloggers.

The tide, however, appears to be turning as evangelical bloggers begin to take this new medium seriously. There are now six evangelical bloggers in the top 100 [(18) HughHewitt.com; (19) the evangelical outpost; (28) La Shawn Barber's Corner; (32) ScrappleFace; (40) World Magazine Blog; (64) Parableman] and five more in the top 200 [(109) Le Sabot Post-Moderne; (116) Adrian Warnock's UK Evangelical Blog; (149) Patriot Paradox; (157) In the Agora; and (178) Wittenberg Gate.]

As the blogosphere matures it’s influence will continue to expand. It will continue to shape ideas, set political agendas, and shape culture. Christians who believe that a Biblical worldview has something important to add to the conversation cannot afford to ignore this medium. But that is what much of the church will likely do – at least until the blogosphere begins to have the same impact on society as the universities or the film industry. Then we will be rolling out the trebuchets for another cultural war siege.

But evangelicals are already within the walls. By simply coordinating our efforts we can soon become a force that won’t be easily ignored. To do so, however, we must set aside both envy and false piety. We must set aside petty jealousy when someone else’s blog has more links or gets more traffic. And we must also reject the simplistic notion that we should not strive to gain recognition for our blogging efforts. Our work should be pursued with godly ambition, helping others as we form a genuine community.

To be successful in this effort will require that we band together and help others whether their blogs are more popular or completely unknown. We need to link to and visit each other’s blogs, provide encouragement, and praise excellence and quality wherever it is found. Evangelicals can have a profound impact on society and culture. But first we must “buy a ticket.”

Note: In an effort to simplify the process, I’ve started a form of “Church Directory” of evangelical blogs using Blogrolling:

<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript" src="http://rpc.blogrolling.com/display.php?r=997376992674a6901aec4b89468af57c"></script>

Have an evangelical blog that you want to add to the list? Send me an email or provide the URL in the comments sections and I'll add them to "The Church Directory."

Update: Here are a few additional comments:

  • Building this blogroll is one of the ways I can give something back to my fellow evangelical bloggers. Almost everyone in the list has me on their blogroll already, so I really have nothing to gain. I wanted to do this for those who are struggling to climb up to a point where they can gain the notice and attention they deserve.
  • The list can have a thousand names but unless the script is embedded in our blogs it will be a wasted effort. You don’t have to have the blogroll on your site to be included, but if you are able to make room for it, please do. Think of it as a “love offering” of template space.
  • The blogs blogs are arranged by their ranking in the TTLB so that the bloggers listed can use this post as a reference point to check back and see how far they’ve come. (For the record, when I started blogging in Oct. '03 my rank in the Ecosystem was #16,550.)
  • If you’ve included the script on your site please drop a note in the comments as a way of showing others that you're supporting the effort.

I do a bit of Godblogging over at A Simple Desultory Dangling Conversation (sddc.blogspot.com). NOw that the election is over and once work cools down a bit, I plan to do more.

My pastor has also started a blog, http://mentormarkmemoirs.blogspot.com/

    And don't forget markdroberts.com!

Can you explain a little more about where to put that script and what it does? I'm in the process of setting up my own blog right now title The Greatest Pursuits. (The URL I posted is brand new as of this morning and I don't even have the site populated at all yet.)

This is in large part thanks to your efforts, recognition that I've been doing the work on BBS' without accomplishing the results, and the prompting of the holy spirit, and (indirectly) my pastor. I'm grateful for your series and blogging. Therefore, yours will be the first link added to my blogroll.

    Oh yes, definitely include markdroberts.com.

    Joe:
    Two things: (1) My blog is evangelical; A Physicist's Perspective, http://dmobley.blogspot.com. (And I'm in the TTLB top 500, I think -- I'm around 430).

    (2) I think because of Adrian's work, and the League of Reformed Bloggers, etc., the evangelical bloggers are now doing quite well in the TTLB ecosystem. But speaking for myself, as well as some of the other evangelical blogs I read (like Parablemania) I think we're not doing as well in the traffic rankings. These leagues and blogrolls help a lot in terms of giving people mutual links (and, to some degree, helping us to read one another's blogs) but that doesn't necessarily mean we get the same traffic. I'm ranked around 430 in the Ecosystem, but around 1000th on traffic. Parableman is 64th on links but 716 on traffic; Donald Sensing is 66 on links and 695 on traffic.

I'm sure for some of us, the discrepancy is because we blog well enough that lots of people link to us, even though we don't have that many readers. But I think for others (like me) the discrepancy is because we're in a number of alliances which up our rankings without increasing our traffic.

    Just a thought.

Otherwise, thanks for the great post!

Ah, Hugh Hewitt...James Wolcott mentions him today.

Meanwhile, over at Hewitt's site, he's being conspiratorial about Democrats and Social Security, whilst providing not a scintilla of refutation of the fact that we're going to be ripped off by these Enron-esque folks if the Repubs get their way on this.

Hugh Hewitt is a Liar for Jesus. Social Security is not in crisis and the only beneficiaries of Bush's vague "plans" to "reform" Social Security are fatcats on Wall Street and rich people who don't need Social Security (and who therefore don't want to pay Social Security taxes).

Why do the hearts of evangelicals like Hewitt feel such pity for rich people?

Because they are hypocritical asses, that's why. Lying for Jesus. Watch how quickly this term becomes common parlance, thanks to the Liars for Jesus themselves. I recall that Hugh is also a creationist apologist, which relies on a great assemblage of lies. Surprising? No. It's his willingness to Lie for Jesus that represents the only consistent aspect of Hugh's incessant childish weeping for the plight of rich people.

I think one of the explanations with traffic vs. links is that many people will link to a blog they're not interested in reading regularly because they want to support fellow evangelicals. Another is that evangelicals tend to be more likely to have families, larger families, more other responsibilities (e.g. church, more likelihood of volunteer work), and so on, and they're at least a little more likely to limit their online time more. For that reason, they may have a few blogs they read every day and a lot more that they read every few days or every week.

Another issue that plays a big role in why I get a lot less traffic is that I don't tolerate commenters who just want to argue without giving real arguments. If it's too troll-like, I'll ban them and delete their comments after a warning or two. If it's simply lack of support for their views, and they don't have much more to say, they just get pounced on. Not everyone who would comment at the bigger bloggers who allow that kind of thing (and that includes people like Joe even, who doesn't follow his comments like a hawk and respond to everything he can) would want to engage in the kind of discussion we have frequently at my blog. That explains why certain types of blog frequenters aren't interested in my site. I don't allow them to do what they want to do and get away with it. In other words, my comment interaction discourages a large segment of blog commenters from wanting to participate, and this is by design. I don't want that kind of commenter. As I get more links and higher Google ratings, I get more of the flash-in-the-pan types who will say something dumb and never come back, but the ones who try to turn a blog comment thread into a discussion forum of its own with steam-of-consciousness thinking also realize that it's hard to hijack my comments threads unless the discussion is interesting to me and they know what they're talking about.

As one of my 2005 New Year's resolutions, I have started a blog titled C.H.U.R.C.H. (CHristian URban Conservative Hispanic). I would not say at this point that it is a polished literary work, but I would appreciate any constructive criticism or commentary. I am waiting for my copy of Blog as there are still many concepts and definitions that I do not understand. But I do know how to bookmark and I intend to do that with this blog site. God Bless!

Noone I know in the Christian community has been overly supportive of him, personally, He curses, he has some whacked political opinions, and he's never been that much of a conservative.

Mel made a great movie, that we happened to think made a great witnessing tool. It was never about him - it was about the subject matter of his movie.

I couldn't care less about Mel Gibson - he's a Hollywood celebrity. Did I support his movie? Hh yes. Do I support him? No.

Larry, I'm not going to reply to your snide and insulting comment in like manner but simply restate what I said so as not to be subject to your pseudo-criticism. When people don't give arguments, I point it out and call for arguments. When people give arguments I question, I discuss it with them. I thought that was fairly obvious, but apparently not. Now you apparently think I've given some arguments that you consider bad. I've almost never made outlandish claims without defending them unless I was consciously doing so, so I'm not sure what you're talking about unless you just completely misunderstood what I was saying.

What would be considered Evangelical? Are you looking for a list of blogs that specifically and directly promote the Word of God? Ones that attempt open conversion? Or just people who are Christ-centered?

For example, my faith guides everything I do, and I attempt to shape the political landscape according to that worldview, but I attempt to do it without hitting people over the head with the Bible. In fact, I rarely mention the Bible as support or reasoning for ideas, but that support and reasoning is always there...

and my Pastor's Dawg Blog at:
    http://www.e3leadershipgroup.org/blog/
Both are administereded by me, but I will have to ask their owners about putting the blogroll on them.

Please add http://semicolon.reachcoop.org to your list. It's a mommmy blog/litblog/evangelical Christian blog/whatever I want to talk about blog. I've read somewhere that it's better to have a focus, but I tend to be multi-focused--which is probably why I'm not even on the radar screen in terms of blog traffic. Oh, well.

Remember - this is a TON of blogs. He has a life, too :D

Joe, I would suggest adding a comment that it may take you 24-48 hours to add it, or something to that effect (if not more.. lol). Be patient. Joe's superhumanly prolific, as his regular readers all know - but even superblogger has to meet the great enemy: Time!

(Note to Joe: I take paypal for all "shameless promotion" gigs... :D)

Seriously, though - thanks ever so much for doing this.

RK - it is becasue there are a ton of blogs and because Joe is only human (like all of us) that I thought perhaps he had missed my comment. I also wanted to let him know I have added the blogroll as he asked if people would let him know that. No offence meant on my part - I'm human too.

    Throw me in there: http://firewatching.com/itsara

I've struggled with this many times in the last 5 months since I started my blog. There's a decent-sized part of me that desperately wants attention - for mixed reasons. I'm trying hard to remember to write out of love or simply to write, and not to write in order to get attention (that's hard), but I agree with your sentiment that it may simply not do any good if nobody ever reads it.

Great Article. I agree that blogs offer a wonderfull opportunity for evangelical communication and influence. I envision Christians from around the world sharing, encouraging one another and growing together as they build up Christ's Church for the glory of God.

I have some requests, if I can do that. I'd sure miss these guys on my blogroll. It would be nice to have them included:

Would you add Carl over at The 'Grub Street' Plumber, would ya? He's too busy (OK, his wife is actually) having twins.

    And The Great Separation

    And Happy Husband

    And Marriages Restored

All these folks are very good. Check 'em out.
