A Truly Balanced Ticket

John McCain says if Kerry considers him as a potential running mate that he would give the proposal due consideration. Captain Ed isn’t pleased by the news:

Senator McCain must be taking something himself to even start such a rumor. I supported McCain in 2000, but now I'm wondering if he's in full command of his faculties. If he wants to be considered for the Democratic presidential ticket, I would assume the first step would be to change party affiliation. Even John Edwards knows enough to say "No" when asked that question.

I’m not sure why Ed doesn’t like the idea. Personally, I’m all for it. McCain would certainly be better than any Democrat that might be considered. And in the unlikely event that Kerry could get elected who better to be a 'heartbeat away from the Presidency" than one of our own (even if he is somewhat of a loose canon). After all, what better way for the Democrats to achieve a 'balanced ticket" than by adding a Republican.

I find this horrifying. McCain is giving legitimacy to Kerry, who would disengage from the current war, further endangering the United States. People I know see McCain as being "good" (as opposed to soft) on defense, and if he publicly supports Kerry's candidacy, that makes Kerry seem okay on defense issues. And a statement like this will be seen as supporting Kerry, that's how it will be played in the major media where most people get their news.

Also-- how could McCain-- who supposedly is pro-life, even muse aloud about being on a ticket with someone who supports partial birth abortion?

This statement-- whether in jest or however he meant it-- is being taken as an approval of Kerry and his policies by a man people see as a good Republican.

I agree with Julie. By becoming Kerry's running mate, McCain would be giving his support to John Kerry. Not only that, but he would have to be out campaigning for John Kerry! Can a Republican in good faith actually go out campaigning for John Kerry?

Though I still think the far left Kerry would keep the ticket tipping to the left, it would certainly make him more appealing to those in the middle. In what so far appears to be a pretty close race, gaining a few percent of the voters in the middle could make all of the difference.

But, what would the far left voters do? Would they be willing to vote for McCain? Perhaps it would drive them further left, so far left that they would flip around to the right side?!

The only thing that could 'balance' a Democrat ticket would be someone from the Libertarian or Constitution parties.

The people who were fooled into voting for mccain by believing his lies that he is a republican need to get the traitor dis-elected really soon.....he is a poster boy for recall from the senate.
Why are the Republicans in the senate not censuring him? And Jeffords, and snow, and those other two insipid twerps?
Damn them to hell.
