Libertarians Explained

For anyone still unclear about how to describe libertarians to your non-political friends, John Coleman has provided a rather accurate explanation:

Here’s the breakdown: On the negative side, Libertarians are crazy. Most became Libertarians because they have some social quirk that disallows them from participation in normal society — picture excessive drug use, Dungeons and Dragons play or fascination with the word “metrosexual,” for instance. They are strange. You can’t take them home to your parents, unless, of course, your parents are members of some druid cult. They frighten small children.

On the positive side, they may be weird, but at least they want to leave you alone. Putting most politicians in office is like putting Michael Jackson in charge of a day care facility — they might not do anything wrong, but you feel pretty uncomfortable leaving them alone.

Social Conservative (n): 1) Unprincipled, generally right-wing politically oriented individual who considers it their God-given right to impose their belief system on a society. Generally such an individual is the political fraternal twin of the American "Left-Liberal" as both scream victim when their agenda is not advanced and find oppression in every attempt to preserve the rights of those who are doing them no harm and disagreeing with their views. Such individuals are generally given to short attention spans and consistent inability to view the bigger picture. Often getting side tracked on peripheral issues which are of no concern to the majority of the electorate, they squander any hope of building a coalition to create a freer society by obsessing over often no more than two issues. Generally these issues are abortion and school prayer. Rather than putting aside differences and work with similar right-wing factions, they are pathologically incapable of overcoming objections to small ideological differneces and thus give a victory to the American Communists (Democrats) by siding with the American Socialists (Republicans). They are also generally given to extreme exaggeration that defies common sense, for example arguing that Libertarians are a new form Communist insurgency in America. Do not be alarmed, this pathology can be cured by exposing oneself to copius quantities of Classical Liberal theory such as John Locke, Thomas Jefferson and Adam Smith, as well as modern Libertarians such as Hayek and Friedmon.
