My Political Compass Needs Calibrating

If asked about my place on the political spectrum I would say that I’m an anti-abortion, pro-globalization, Weekly Standard-reading, Dennis Miller-quoting, flag-waving, compassionate (neo)conservative. So naturally that means that my views are similar to…Tony Blair?

Okay, I was thinking I'd fall somewhere close to Reagan or George W. (or at least George H.). But according to the Political Compass I fall here.

Find your place by taking this test.

You'd be better off ignoring the Political Compass. It's garbage. Among other things, they assume that everything can be boiled down to your views on economics and government control.

They completely ignore other factors like the place of morality in the public sphere. I'm pretty sure the Samizdata people also had some things to say last year about how they mischaracterize libertarianism.

I also recall that they asked some questions to which I didn't believe the correct answer was present. (That is none of the answers matched up closely to my beliefs at all.) That's a common failing of online surveys, but most of them aren't trying to tell people where they fall on the grand political spectrum.
